Key Theory Revision

ANALYSIS OF HUMANS: OPENING SCENES

  • the first shot of a warehouse full of people has a dolly shot which shows the vastness and multitude of bodies in there
  • Crane shot/high angle of the people with only one moving gives the girl significance
  • Introduction to the characters by having an establishing shot of the city, shots within the house and mid shots of each character
  • Low key and cold lighting within the warehouse makes it seem secretive and sneaky
  • Contrast and binary opposite of the green and bright with natural lighting where the real people are
  • Use of a low angle shot of the moon could be referential to the supernatural or something inhuman like werewolves
  • Long shot of the living room and the Hawkins family introduces the characters but also presents the ideological perspective that modern families are reliant on technology and families are used to commodities within the household
  • Male gaze theories are in practice here because the camera teases the way that the females are only wearing underwear, as well as the camera having more focus of females within the warehouse
  • Voyeurism of the naked synths
  • Assorted news footage 9stock footage) with distortion and articles of robots (montage) create the effect of the alternate reality or the future
  • Creates a parallel between fiction and reality
  • Close up of eyes could be referential to Blade Runner, and the eyes are an important image of humanity and morality

SOUND
  • The eye of the synth opens with a noise that is synthetic and sounds like they have been turned on, makes them unique (protagonist)
  • Heavily synthetic, quite high pitched noises, which elevates how the synths are unnatural snd gives off a theme/leitmotif
  • Use of pan pipes is a bit creepy
  • Drum beat as the pace increases
  • A kind of disrupted noise as though a television has been interrupted
  • Intertextuality of artists like 'Kraftwerk' and 'Daft Punk' displays the techno aspect of the series
  • It demonstrates how it takes place in an alternate universe
