Riptide - Vance Joy (2013)

Key word recap:
Objectification - where a person is treated or presented as an object
Sexualisation - where a person is viewed and presented as something for sexual gratification
Voyeurism - pleasure from watching someone when they don't know you are
Scopophilia - enjoying watching someone when they are unaware of you

Analysis of the representation of women in Riptide:

In this screenshot, a high angle close up shot is used in order to display power over the woman in the image. The close up shot also emphasizes her fear and the mise-en-scene of her messy hair suggests that she is in a position that she may not have willingly wanted to be in. This displays patriarchal hegemonic ideologies because she is being displayed as weak, and women are seen as the weaker sex.

The woman in this screenshot is being watched from behind and is taking her swimsuit off. This positions the viewer in a voyeuristic manner as we are watching this woman take off her clothes, which would be wrong in most other cases. There is also the element of male gaze here, as her body is on display in order to get the attention of heterosexual male viewers.

This low angle mid shot displays the woman in the frame as being powerful, and the mise-en-scene of the yellow jumper and tan velvet jacket could actually suggest that she has some power as these colours and fabrics connote to gold and power.

In this mid shot, the woman is escaping from being tied up. She is framed in the center of the screen to start off with but then the rest of the shot is concentrated on the left third of the screen. She is also dressed as if she were quite young, and the symbolic code of her escaping could be that she is longing to be free from the things which are holding her back in her life.

This mid shot has high key lighting on the woman's face, and here women are being represented as being entertainers. The mise-en-scene of the red lipstick could also display how she is being shown here as wanting to entice men, as red lipstick connotes to being sexy. She is also dressed very glamorously and the fact she is wearing makeup could display how women only care about the way they look.

This is a very scopophillic image because here we can see that not only is the woman watching something with her own binoculars, but she is also distracted and is being watched by someone in the bushes. The viewer is placed in a very voyeuristic position, and the low angle shot here also connotes to woman being objects because it is almost as though they want to look up her skirt.

This shot is of a stereo-typically pretty woman (the mise-en-scene of the long blonde hair) and she is gazing into the ocean, which gives a sense that she seeks escape from her life and dreams of adventure. Another element that adds to the sense of adventure is the exoticism of the print on her shirt as well as the setting of a nice beach.

How does the video to 'RIPTIDE' encode feminist ideologies?
- A lot of the video is very sexist, and this could be that they are over exaggerating the way that women are normally represented in music videos. For example, there is the book saying "how to take photos of women" linking to Lisbet Van Zoonen and the male gaze. It is an ironic representation of patriarchal hegemony.
- Many of the women in this video are in very stereotypically masculine clothes, for example the woman in the velvet jacket. The low angle mid shot and her gesture also connotes  power.
- Mid shot of woman bound in ropes could symbolise how women are still seen as being the weaker sex and still feel like they're tied down to responsibilities.
- Woman in the yellow swimsuit shows confidence, because firstly this type of costume is seen as risky and takes a lot of confidence however her stance and what she's doing shows she's in charge of her body and what she does with it.
- The video lacks anchorage which forces the audience to make up their own minds about what is going on.
- Scopophilia is used throughout this which would emphasise it is creepy and not OK.
- Use of low angle shot gives the women in them power and displays them as being more power than the viewer.
- The woman singing seems rebellious as she is singing the words wrong even though she is being tortured for it.
- The video is highly polysemic.

INTERTEXTUALITY : WHEN ONE MEDIA PRODUCT REFERENCES OTHER MEDIA PRODUCTS,  ALLOWING THE AUDIENCE A NEW WAY TO RELATE TO THE PRODUCT AND THE VIEWER GETS MORE SATISFACTION WHEN THEY GET THE REFERENCE.

Suspiria (1977) -
- Paradigms of the horror genre through the use of weapons and gore (for example, razor to the throat, noose)
- Archetypal weak female protagonist, like a damsel in distress
- Colour scheme is bright and gaudy, highly typical of the European horror genre
- Sound is very suspenseful and non-diegetic
- Diegetic female screaming
- Links to the retro feel of riptide and the brief scenes of horror

SURREALISM IS AN ARTISTIC MOVEMENT WHICH CAME ABOUT IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. IT ORIGINATED IN FRANCE AND CAME FROM DADAISM.

An eye line match or a match on action is where the producer cuts from something happening to the reaction of something happening, and generally they would make sense with the previous shot or image. Riptide has very little of these and therefore links to surrealism, as the use of montage is very much like surrealist films such as "un chien andalou". The audience will be provided with the gratification of being able to have another type of social interaction, as they will talk about the polysemy as well as the type of intertextuality within it.
