Representation

Why representation is important:

  • allows audience to relate to characters
  • allows the producer to construct a text easier
  • coveys the ideology in a more idea way for the producer
  • gives insight into other cultures etc that people otherwise wouldn't know about
  • they are NOT REAL - they are a construction of reality, but also constructs reality!!!
  • a type of bias
  • they aren't the world itself, but a recreation of the world

CAMILLE

- she is representing young girls, and therefore her long hair and pale skin make her seem delicate and gentle
- atypical as she is not in hoodie or jeans, and quite complex
- her complexity mirrors the complexity of the show
- the red hair seems unconventional, and as one of 'The Returned' she is meant to stand out
- the target audience may feel sympathy towards her as she is going through a confusing time being alive all of a sudden

SIMON

- he is supposed to represent young men and he looks very youthful
- the leather jacket and dark hair are something that could be stereotypically associated with someone who is attractive
- the darkness of his clothing and hair seems quite mysterious, like his character, and could make them more attracted to him because of the mystery
- stereotypical of what French people find attractive and this is because that is who it is aimed at

JULIE

- she represents older, single women and her dark hair is not what may be perceived as typically attractive (i.e. blonde hair)
- her baggy, old-style clothes and her messy aesthetic make her seem a bit of a mess, as though her life is not organised and as though she is unsuccessful with it
- the target audience may feel that if you are a single woman living on your own, that you are a bit unorganised and also may make her seem a bit strange, like an outcast
CLAIRE

- she is representing mothers, and by her plain attire and her simple yet dressed hair, she seems to be the type of woman who is very basic and simple because she has a lot going on in her life
- the audience may see this and relate to how busy she is, so much so that her beauty and fashion lays in what is quick and simple
- her costume is low-key and chic, almost stylish, aspirational

What 'Les Revenants' represents -

  • a small, rural French town
  • the people of France, stereotypical french beauty
  • not conventional view of France
  • white people, with an exclusively white cast
  • death and the way that people deal with it
