Metanarrative - an overarching narrative or system of belief which helps us to make sense of the world.

Post Modernism - cannot have a definition. It often values style over substance and emphasises surface readings over deeper analysis. An example of post-modernism is also breaking the fourth wall.

RIPTIDE - Vance Joy

  • montage of shots suggest themes of dying and death
  • unpredictable and deliberately misleading montage of shots which provokes polysemic interpretations
  • Each shot consistently matches the song lyrics
  • Extremely confusing video however it makes sense to the song 
  • Intertextuality as it refers to old films, and the mise-en-scene of the cowboy conforms to conventions of western films and uses referential codes
  • Horror films are referenced multiple times, such as the ouija board and this mise-en-scene is typically associated with horror cinema
  • Mise-en-scene throughout is very 70s and anchors the audience into this time period and this is quite edgy and cool to many audiences
  • Mid/ls of the woman being dragged under the bed is slightly low angle and the low key lighting which connotes to darkness, misery and treat
  • Voyeuristic mid shot as well as the photograph of the book on photographing woman is quite objective and the woman is supposed to be stereotypically pretty. Connotations to Bond films and Bond girls. 
  • Positions the audience as being the pevert, links to Lisbet van Zoonen

Analysis/Audience responses: Serif font is almost sophisticated and would attract female audiences as they would feel this is a sophisticated product. It is also stereotypically feminine. The pink is quite delicate and dainty. The woman in the photo is of a woman who seems to be in her 30s. Her features are very smooth as well as having perfect teeth, and this would make women feel that they must read this magazine to be as perfect as her. (mise-en-scene). There is also a huge stress on being a housewife in this magazine, which is implied by the lexis about a home lifestyle such as "kitchen". (mode of address). There is a strong Z-line here with the title and the band at the bottom of the cover, which draws the attention to the fact that to be a true woman you would care about that the most and how you look. Audience Responses: Some women could take from this a type of freedom that they can make their kitchen their own and it is something they can be proud of  The articles are boring and the middle bottom article is quite condescending as it uses lexis such as "girl" which evokes a feeling of weakness Some women may not be interested in this at all whereas other may pay more attention in the kitchen There is a reminder here that you should get the "man in your life" to put it together, as though women need to marry or have a partner It's suggesting that you need to be smart about your money, which is a reminder that women don't earn a lot of money however it is being positive about it The DIY aspect is effective because it shows how women are being made to feel that they can actually do something with their lives  The photograph of a woman showing her son how to cook even though men aren't necessarily the cooks of the house The repeated use of w

What do you think has gone particularly well so far this year? What are your strengths? I think what has gone well so far is that I am understanding more terminology this year and how I can incorporate them into my exams. I also feel as though I am quite strong in picking up the meanings of terms quite quickly, and therefore it is easy to be able to put them into answers. What is stopping you from achieving your goals? What threats might you face, (for example not enough time, lack of organisation, pressure from other subjects...) I am very restless, and get distracted from things easily.
