THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPONENT 1 AND 2:

  • Component 1 is comparing and contrasting media texts, and you don't know what will come up in the exam
  • Component 2 is where you analyse the media text and what it is made up of and why
Component 2 example
Compared with the past, David Gauntelett argues that in the media today, 'we no longer set singular, straightforward messages about ideal types of male and female identities'.

Evaluate the validity of this claim with reference to the set editions of Woman and Adbusters and the historical context in which they were produced. [30]

What you need to answer this:
  • include and expand on your own opinion
  • reference both magazines in your answer
  • there is historical context that you need to include
  • you need to almost make up a question yourself
  • the argument does not need to be balanced
  • Spend 50 minutes on each question, 10 planning and 40 writing.

Semiotics re-cap:
- Hermeneutic
- Proairetic
- Symbolic
- Referential

"We see the world through what it isn't and therefore we don't see it for what it is" - Binary oppositions, Claude Levi-Strauss

NAME OF MAGAZINE: Maximum Rock n Roll
IMAGES: The cover of the magazine has a crane shot of a band member who we could infer has been dropped by the crowd whilst crowd surfing. Many of the photos are action shots, which give movement to an otherwise boring and blocky magazine. The images are also monochrome which keep to the theme of the magazine.
MISE-EN-SCENE: The magazine is very grungy and it isn't tide or perfect, and this reflects that the style of music is supposed to be impulsive and carefree.
LAYOUT AND DESIGN: This magazine reflects the images in that there is a very busy layout on the pages with a lot of writing, however it is very regular and the pages have lots of blocks of writing. It is also completely monochrome, which is interesting and this creates a more edgy feel to the magazine as well as the mise-en-scene and imagery.

Codes and Conventions of Magazines
-Stereotypically glossy and shiny with high quality paper, and this is because they are made to last longer and for people to read more than once
- A lot of advertisement is in most magazines
- A magazine is more about the design and look of the magazine rather than the articles within it
- Some magazines come with free gifts or samples alongside or within them
- More about gossip and adopt more of a casual mode of address with some colloquialisms
- An exclusionary mode of address, which is made for more niche and specific audiences
