HYBRID GENRES AND SUB-GENRES

Hybrid Genres: Several genres that are mixed together, for example romantic comedies.
Sub-genres: When there is a certain genre with more specific areas (a genre within a genre), for example metal and pirate metal.

(There can be hybrid genres that are also sub-genres)

Generic Paradigms - also known as 'Genre Conventions', which are aspects of a media text that demonstrate to the audience what genre a media product is, for example editing, mise-en-scene, sound etc). This links to Iconography, as they are the familiar signs of a genre and represent what we are watching.

UTOPIA, 2013
  • Trailer seemed to be quite dystopian
  • A few elements of horror, psychopathic
  • Seems like it could be a mystery show, lots of hermeneutic code used in the trailer
  • There are strange drawings within the trailer which conform to mystery and horror
  • The empty establishing shots and run down buildings subvert to dystopia
  • Hostage links to horror genre
  • Psychological horror
  • Could include some black comedy (dark humour)
  • Contrapuntal music is used to create a mysterious atmosphere

INTERTEXTUALITY: where one media product references another media product. It is effective because it involves the audience in a way that you previously couldn't. It is often used in comedy due to the fact that it makes something funnier. It also broadens the demographics of the target audience. As well as this, it allows the producer to make fun of something that would otherwise be serious. The use of more mature films that are made more childish means people can deal better with things that are happening in the world.

Genre exists so that we will be able to distinguish different types of media products as well as producers etc being able to easily build a product that they can sell to a specific audience. Both audiences and producers benefit from this as it means that as well as people knowing what they like, producers can easily form ideas. Advantages of this is that it makes it easier for people to be able to know what they like without having to put in too much effort, and classifying films just makes it easier for people to know what to watch so that it isn't a waste of time. A disadvantage of this is that it means an audience can have certain expectations of a film and people can be let down. However, challenging expectations can mean it will be a good film due to the fact that it could be better than they expected. Another disadvantage is that it also shows how people are simply subdivided, and don't really think about certain things for themselves.
