Analysis of Print Media

In this advertisement, we can see that the company is selling the bag. This is obvious in the composition of the two photographs, in the first rule of thirds is used in order to draw the eye to it, and the second it is taking up most of the frame. The shot types and layout of each shot are also effective in drawing attention to the bag, as in the first a mid shot is used with the bag obviously placed in the front of the shot and in the second it is a close up of the bag itself. The model looks quite content, and is wearing a short dress which could connote to being young, fun and stylish, and the messy hair of the model could symbolise how she is carefree and young. It is also very clear that this is by the bag company 'Coach', as their logo is in a serif font and you can clearly see this against the white, contrasting background.

In this advertisement, the company has tried to show that their mascara will make your eyelashes bold as well as withstanding  busy work day. For example, they have used the shot of a close up of her face shows that she is strong, and the black clothes symbolise a rebellious nature. The rule of thirds is used to draw attention to her eyes, which are selling the product. The font is sans-serif, and creates yet another bold look because letters without curls are symbolic of modern culture as well as being strong and sure of themselves. It is also quite a basic font, and therefore could imply that makeup is a staple to a woman's life. There are a lot of symbolic codes within the photo, for example the woman's face is soft and glowing and this implies that she is more confident and almost angelic because of the product. Mise-en-scene is used by placing the advert in the city, showing that she is busy and this connotes to a working class lifestyle rather than a high end product. Their slogan is also "maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline!" and this combined with the depth-of-field of the woman in the background which could imply that she is quite a strong woman who wants to stand out. "New York" expresses a busy atmosphere, which is also possibly more modern and chic and relates to the audience's lifestyle. Her hand within the image is a proairetic code, showing us that the makeup is about to be applied. The use of the mascara image is quite ubiquitous, reinforcing the fact that is is everywhere therefore everyone must have it.
