HUMANS - ep 1
Episode 1
- What science fiction codes and conventions are evidenced? Are these utilised in a typical or atypical way?
The show is set in the current world, and what makes it more science fiction is the setting of the science labs and the more dystopian ideologies of robots. The sound track is mostly computer generated (synthetic), and this adds to the atmosphere of the 'synthetic' beings within the show.
- What groups are represented? What ideological perspective?
Modern day representations of human beings here is juxtaposed by the 'synth' people and this comes into question what the ideologies of being a human or person should be. Cultures are widely represented within this film with black, white and asian actors being used to play both synth and human parts.
The main part of this show is based on a family and this family is represented as being a typical middle class nuclear family.
- Who is the primary target audience for this show?
The primary target audience for this is possible someone who is middle class, and in my opinion it is for young adults as it is set in a modern world that young adults are more familiar with.
- All science fiction holds a mirror to society. What real world allegorical themes are dealt with here?
Some themes that are obvious here is the way the world is becoming more extensively technologically advanced and more commodities, however there are some deeper themes addressed here such as slavery, objectification and also morality/ethics.
- What character archetypes are utilised in this show? To what extent does the narrative rely on them?
- What intertextual references/referential codes did you notice? How do these potentially reward the viewing experience?
